Exposure meter – precise exposure in analog photography
What does an exposure meter do?
What does an exposure meter do?
An exposure meter measures the light falling on a subject (incident metering) or being reflected from it (reflected metering). From this, it calculates appropriate values for aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.
Why do you need an external light meter?
Why do you need an external light meter?
Many analog cameras – e.g., folding cameras or plate cameras – do not have a built-in light meter. An external device helps to ensure reliably correct exposure, especially with manually operated cameras.
What is the difference between light measurement and object measurement?
What is the difference between light measurement and object measurement?
In incident light metering, the exposure meter measures the incident light directly at the subject – particularly accurate in studio lighting or outdoors. Reflected light metering measures the reflected light from the camera position – similar to an internal exposure meter.
Are there different types of light meters?
Are there different types of light meters?
Yes. There are:
- Digital handheld exposure meter with LCD display
- Analog devices with needle or scale
- Some models also measure flash light or are optimized for studio lighting.
What values can I set or read?
What values can I set or read?
You specify the ISO and, if applicable, the shutter speed or aperture, and the device provides the corresponding third-party value. Some models also offer an EV (exposure value) display, for example, for use with older cameras.
Are old light meters still accurate?
Are old light meters still accurate?
Many are mechanically durable. In electronic models, the measuring cell can age. We test their functionality before selling them.
How do I measure correctly with a light meter?
How do I measure correctly with a light meter?
When using incident light metering, hold the meter at the subject, not from the camera's perspective. For portraits, for example, at the subject's eye level. When using reflected light metering, measure towards the subject – in backlit situations, take the exposure compensation factor into account.
Is a light meter also useful with digital cameras?
Is a light meter also useful with digital cameras?
That's generally not necessary – modern digital cameras measure exposure automatically. However, in exceptional situations (e.g., studio, continuous lighting), an exposure meter can still be helpful.
How do we classify the optical state?
How do we classify the optical state?
Our used light meters are manually inspected before sale and classified into the following condition categories:
- Good: Technically fully functional with slight to normal signs of wear (e.g. small scratches or slightly dull casing parts).
- Acceptable: Functional, but with more noticeable signs of use such as deeper scratches, wear and tear, or slight yellowing of plastic parts.
- Defect: Not functional – suitable as a source of spare parts or for decoration.
How do we test the light meters?
How do we test the light meters?
We are testing these functions:
✅ Measurement response (light and/or aperture scale)
✅ Ease of use of the settings
✅ Display (analog or digital)
We do not check these points:
❌ Accuracy compared to reference measuring instruments
❌ Compatibility with specific camera models or accessories
Please note: Each light meter is unique. Optical variations such as logos, serial numbers, or casing colors are possible.
