What is a TLR camera?

A TLR (Twin-Lens Reflex) camera has two lenses stacked on top of each other: one for taking the picture, and one for previewing the image in the viewfinder. The upper lens reflects the image onto a focusing screen, while the lower lens exposes the film.

How does a TLR differ from an SLR?

With TLRs, you don't see the subject through the taking lens, but through a second, fixed lens. There is no flipping mirror – therefore, TLRs operate quietly and without vibration.

Why does the viewfinder image look reversed?

The focusing screen displays the image reversed. This is normal for TLRs, as the image is reflected by a mirror but not rotated. With a little practice, image composition can still be achieved intuitively.

What type of film does a TLR camera use?

Almost all TLRs use 120 roll film , which produces 6x6 cm images. This results in 12 images per roll. The film is still available and widely used today.

Can I use other film formats?

No, not by default – TLRs are designed for 120 roll film. Some cameras can be converted to 35mm with adapters, but that's more of a specialized solution.

How do I insert the film?

You place the roll of film in the lower chamber, pull the paper up to the mark, and then cock the shutter. A red window indicator or a counter shows when you are ready to take a picture.

How do I focus with a TLR?

They focus using the top lens on the focusing screen. Many TLRs have a fold-out magnifying lens to better judge focus.

How is the exposure set?

You set the aperture and shutter speed manually on the lens. If your camera doesn't have a built-in light meter, an external light meter will help you determine the correct exposure.

What is special about photography with a TLR?

They photograph from above into the viewfinder – ideal for discreet work. The square format offers creative possibilities in image composition.

How do we classify the optical state?

Our used TLR cameras are manually inspected before sale and classified into the following condition categories:

Good: Fully functional with normal signs of wear. Viewfinder image, film transport and shutter tested.
Acceptable: Functional with significant signs of wear or slight limitations in operation.
Partial defect: Basic functions are present, but the exposure meter is defective.
Defect: Not functional – suitable as decoration or spare parts donor.

Please note: Each camera is unique. Logos, serial numbers, or signs of wear may vary. Test shots with film are not performed.
