How does a folding camera work?

When unfolded, the bellows expand between the lens and the film back. The camera is then ready to take a picture. The shutter is operated manually – often via a cable release or directly on the lens.

Why are folding cameras so compact?

What is the difference between bellows cameras and folding cameras?

All folding cameras use a folding principle – with or without bellows. Bellows allow for variable lens distances (focus), while other models fold the lens in rigidly.

What type of film does a folding camera use?

Most models use 120 roll film – a medium format film that is still available today. Early models sometimes use formats that are no longer produced, so it's important to check the product description.

How many pictures can I get with 120 film?

That depends on the image format:

6×9 cm → 8 shots
6×6 cm → 12 shots
6×4.5 cm → 16 shots

Can I use modern films in old folding cameras?

Often yes – as long as it's 120 film. However, older camera models may require special reels. You can find this information in the respective product description.

How do you focus a folding camera?

Many folding cameras have an estimation scale (for setting the distance by feel). Some high-quality models offer a rangefinder or focusing screen.

Do you need a light meter?

Few folding cameras have a built-in light meter. If not, an external light meter can help determine the appropriate aperture and shutter speed settings.

Is taking photos with folding cameras complicated?

How do we classify the optical state?

Our used folding cameras are manually inspected before sale and classified into the following condition categories:

Good: Fully functional with minor signs of wear. Bellows are airtight, trigger and shutter have been tested.
Acceptable: Functional, but with noticeable signs of wear or slight play in the mechanism.
Partial defect: Basic functions are present, but the light meter is defective.
Defect: Not functional – suitable as decoration or spare parts donor.

How do we test the cameras?

We are testing these functions:

✅ Closure
✅ Bellows for light tightness
✅ Light meter (if available)

We do not check these points:
❌ Frame counter or self-timer

Please note: Each camera is unique. Variations in logos, serial numbers, or visual details are possible. Test shots with film material are not performed.
